About (Gin) Advent Calendars

(This article was started just before the beginning of December but was eventually finished after Christmas Eve…)

I’ve been watching (regular) German TV lately. This alone could suffice as breaking news as I literally never watch TV. I do have a TV, but all that’s normally running on there is an app for sports events, preferably US sports. Anyway, that’s a different story. What caught my attention, though, was a commercial for “Advent Calendars for men”. I didn’t Google the brand afterwards but what I was able to spot during the ad ranged from beer calenders over tool boxes all the way to a whisky Advent Calendar.

Now this is not an entirely new discovery, but it proves that the concept of a box with 24 little doors, filled with SPIRITS, has found its way into our society. It has done so 2 or 3 years ago, you may be saying now. But I have to admit I have not spent many thoughts about these calendars until just recently.

Lucky me: 2 Calendars this time

I am now doing so for good reason. Two good reasons, to be precise. While I didn’t own one of them last Christmas (I failed to buy one myself and neither did my loved ones hold one for me to enjoy), I could consider myself twice as lucky this time around:

Both “Drinks by the dram” from the UK as well as my Hamburg-based friends of Tastillery somehow became aware of the unlucky me of 2018 and decided to hand me one of their respective calendars this year. *

Contrary to the usual, I will be splitting this post into two separate parts. One in English, about the “Gin Advent Calendar” by Drinks by the Dram and a second part in German (!) about the Tastillery “Gin Adventskalender”. This is mainly due to geographical availability of products and hence the different target audiences both have.

“The Gin Advent Calendar” by Drinks by the Dram

Drinks by the Dram from the UK have been releasing their spirit Advent calendars for several years now. In the gin segment alone there are a hand full of different options to select from. But there is whiskey and rum, too. The one I received is called “The Gin Advent Calendar” and consists of 24 little drams. Each of the flasks contains 3 CL of gin and is hand-waxed, which I thought was a really nice detail. The small bottles basically look all the same with a standardized lable. Some of them had the gin’s name written in standard neutral letters, others had a branded lable with the gin brand’s font etc. But other than that, the 24 looked very much alike.

What’s inside?

I would describe the “Gin Advent Calendar’s” selection as a mix of gins which are quite well known globally and others of which I had literally never heard before. Many local, British gins were to be found behind the little doors of which many were really small batch gins. That was really cool. Sometimes I even had to Google the gins to see where they are being distilled. So I actually learned something here, as well.

One high- and one low-light

Really the only thing that wasn’t 100% great about the Gin Advent Calendar was its the cardboard it was made of. Some of the doors opened a bit difficult and were placed really close to one another. As a result, I ripped some of them off unintentionally and thus left a calendar behind which didn’t look as picture perfect as it did in the beginning. On the other side, however, the selection of featured gins could have hardly been any more exciting. I counted 11 gins I hadn’t tried before, which is almost 50 % of the calendar and is a really good level, I think.

In conclusion: if you are a bit more patient than I was when opening the doors, The Gin Advent Calendar by Drinks by the Dram is a very good choice for yourself or you family and friends. I thought it was reasonably priced, as well. And a big additional plus is the vast variety of calendars – even within the gin segment, they have to chose from.

“Gin Adventskalender” von Tastillery

Und nun auf Deutsch: denn den Tastillery Gin Adventskalender gab es (noch) nur für Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz. So viel zur Kritik vorweg, denn das ist eigentlich auch schon der einzige Kritikpunkt an diesem Schmuckstück eines Adventskalenders. Und so wie ich Waldemar und Andreas kenne, werden sie bis zum 01.12.2020 einen Weg gefunden haben auch Gin-Liebhaber außerhalb der DACH-Region zu bespaßen.

Wie gerade schon erwähnt: der Kalender ist, wie alles was die beiden herausbringen, ein echter Hingucker. Absolut leanes Design, das gleichzeitig aber viele verspielte Details parat hält und den Design-affinen Gin-Trinker ins Schwärmen kommen lässt. Dass sich die beiden Flügeltüre, hinter denen sich die eigentliche Schätze verberge, per Magneten öffnen und schließen lassen, zeigt gleich: hier wurde an alles gedacht.

Was ist drinnen?

Im Inneren findet sich ein schön aufgemacht Inlay, also ein kleines Heft welches nicht nur die Herkunft und Aromen der 24 auserlesenen Gins beschreibt, sondern z.B. auch eine Anleitung enthält, wie man Gin richtig verköstigt. Dies kommt nicht ganz zufällig, denn Tastillery haben hier gleich eines ihrer Signature-Nosinggläser beigepackt – das gibt Extrapunkte!

Die 24 Flakons à 3 CL befinden sich nicht hinter einzelnen Türchen sondern stelle diese selbst dar: jedes Fläschchen hat ein doppeltes Etikett. Heißt, man zieht einen Sticker mit der Nummer des jeweiligen Tages ab und findet darunter den Namen des Gins. Die Labels sind dann, dreifarbig, entsprechend der Töne des Originallabels der Gins gehalten. Wie gesagt: liebe fürs Detail.

Auch in diesem Adventskalender ist die Mischung aus bekannten und weniger bekannten Gins recht ausgewogen. Das Verhältnis hängt natürlich davon ab, wie “bewandert” man generell schon ist. Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass die etwas unbekannteren, lokalen Gins aus Deutschland kommen und ich hier inzwischen einen sehr guten Überblick habe, waren hier weniger Gins dabei die ich wirklich gar nicht kannte. Dennoch hat mir die Auswahl sehr gut gefallen. Kein Gin schien in der Qualität/Besonderheit vom Rest abzufallen. Im Übrigen fand ich es gut auch einige hochwertige Gins gefunden zu haben, die man mit etwas Glück auch beim gut sortierten Edeka nebenan finden kann ohne direkt zum Fachhändler gehen zu müssen. (Okay, was das angeht sind wir in Hamburg ohnehin eher verwöhnt…)

Ein High- und ein Lowlight

Ich tue mir wirklich schwer hier Schwachstellen auszumachen. Für mich als absoluten Gin-Nerd hätten es durchaus noch 1 oder 2 absolute Exoten mehr sein dürfen, aber das ist ein “Klagen” auf extrem hohem Niveau. Insgesamt fand ich die Auswahl im Tastillery Gin Adventskalender sehr sehr gelungen und mit einigen echten Perlen geschmückt. Damit zum Highlight: die Aufmachung des Kalenders. Einfach makellos, detailverliebt und insgesamt wirklich bildhübsch. Damit haben Waldemar und Andreas die Latte für 2020 für sich selbst verdammt hoch gelegt. Andererseits habe ich keine Zweifel daran, dass sie sich kommendes Jahr wieder übertreffen werden. Weiter so!
